Implanted standby defibrillators.

چکیده
I am concerned about the implications of the Editorial by Drs. Lown and Axelrod which appeared in the October 1972 issue of Circulation. Although the authors rightfully point out the numerous technical problems still to be overcome in the development of such defibrillators, their conclusions in the last three paragraphs indicate a heavy bias in favor of "practical research." Although Dr. Lown has been eminently successful with this approach, I believe he is unjustified in using this yardstick to evaluate the research activities of others. The authors take Drs. Mirowski et al. to task for a 1970 article in which they state: "It is too early to determine exactly the indications and contraindications of the standby automatic defibrillator." Drs. Lown and Axelrod believe such a statement should be answered before social energies are expended on research and development of such a device. Since when have answers to such questions been required before research is undertaken? Are Drs. Lown and Axelrod so clairvoyant that they can see the ultimate impractability of someone else's research energies thereby prematurely labelling that work "an imperfect solution in search of a plausible and practical application."? Fortunately, sincere investigators will continue to attack problems even when the prospect of solution is slight and when sensible people shake their heads. ARTHUR J. متن کاملElectromagnetic interference between external defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy-pacemaker (CRT-P) devices.
BACKGROUND Implantable heart rhythm devices are susceptible to interference in hospitals where electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources are ubiquitous. CASE DESCRIPTION We report three cases in which EMI from the external defibrillator caused the inability to interrogate Boston Scientific cardiac resynchronization therapy-pacemaker (CRT-P) devices. We have documented interference with the B...

Lead systems for internal ventricular fibrillation.
We examined the feasibility of using a standby automatic implantable defibrillator and established thresholds for internal defibrillation. The implantable defibrillator senses ventricular fibrillation and delivers an electrical impulse for defibrillation. Two lead systems for the device have been investigated. System I consists of two 12-cm2 silicone-covered titanium mesh patches attached to th...
متن کاملSafety of magnetic resonance imaging in patients with implanted cardiac prostheses and metallic cardiovascular electronic devices.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with implanted cardiac prostheses and metallic cardiovascular electronic devices is sometimes a risky procedure. Thus MRI in these patients should be performed when it is the only examination able to help with the diagnosis. Moreover the diagnostic benefit must outweigh the risks. Coronary artery stents, prosthetic cardiac valves, metal sternal sutur...
